The energy crisis and the drastic increase in bills are becoming central and worrying issues day by day. Gas and energy prices are the big unknowns of this upcoming winter.
According to a forecast by Confindustria, the incidence of energy-related costs in 2023 could rise to 14.6% of total production costs, compared to 11% in 2022 and 4.6% in the pre-pandemic period. While apprehension rises among families and businesses, the conviction grows that there are no great tricks or sure formulas to cope with these possible increases.
However, it is possible to curb the increase in costs: by adopting Artificial Intelligence solutions in time.
AI applications developed for resource planning improve energy efficiency, reduce consumption, and minimize costs.
Especially in the industrial sector, the solutions offered by this technology are numerous: predictive maintenance, IoT monitoring systems, and ERP software for resource planning.
Predictive maintenance involves the analysis, using machine learning, of data from company machinery. This allows for better planning of repairs in plants and ensures the rational use of energy in all production phases.
Monitoring with IoT systems, on the other hand, allows real-time detection of any critical issues and waste in the production chain and resolves them promptly, benefiting greater efficiency and lower costs.
ERP software, integrated with complex AI models such as neural networks, can anticipate consumption and needs for each individual business process. The estimates obtained are used to optimally distribute resources and implement better long-term strategies.
Solutions like these are essential for companies, especially today, to continue to grow and compress production costs.
From a practical point of view, an interesting case comes from Germany, where the Ministry of Economy and Technology funded the KiPro project, with the aim of creating platforms that use Artificial Intelligence to increase energy efficiency.
In our country, the EnerMIND project, conducted by the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, is very interesting. The goal is, through an IoT infrastructure, to make the energy management of steel plants more flexible, through constant and immediate monitoring of energy-saving goals and process variables.
Our team has also developed a solution for energy efficiency, related to a predictive maintenance system for a client company operating in the food sector. The developed system has reduced the energy consumption of production plants by about 23%.
AI, in its various facets, thus proves to be an important ally for businesses, especially to achieve a significant reduction in waste and minimize energy consumption.
